Finding a good Las Vegas locksmith for our clients

What we learned searching for a Las Vegas locksmith. Look for ten years in business, skip the 800 numbers, and ask about a high security rekey. Rekey prices from $69.99.

A good Las Vegas locksmith has been in business about ten years, answers a local number, and offers a choice between a basic rekey at $69.99 and a high security rekey from $99.99.

Key takeaways

  • Few Las Vegas locksmiths have been around ten years
  • Some reuse a dead company's name to look older
  • An 800 number usually means they are not local
  • A high security rekey uses spool pins so the lock cannot be picked

Not all service providers are created equal. That is true in every field, not just locksmiths. When we went looking for a great locksmith in Las Vegas we looked hard, the same way our clients look hard for garage door products and repair.

Look for years in business

Las Vegas is a growing city, and in a growing city you look a little more closely. Our rule was to find a locksmith that had been in business more than ten years. It turns out there are not many. Most had been around less than five years. In some cases the company had taken an old, closed locksmith's name and run with it. We think they hoped customers would assume the company was older than it was.

Watch for 800 numbers

Some companies had an 800 number. That tells us they are not in Las Vegas. Why else would you need one?

The rekey test

We called a few locksmiths to see what kind of quote we would get. The prices were all over the place. Only one company gave us a choice on the rekey job. We could have a simple rekey or a high security rekey, and the price difference was small.

A high security rekey puts spool pins in both the top and bottom chambers of the lock. That takes away the statistical chance of someone picking it. The ordinary rekey uses plain pins, the same as the lock had from the factory.

With that locksmith a basic rekey on two locks is $69.99. A high security rekey is $99.99 to $144.99 depending on the deadbolts you have.
